أعلنت المديرية العامة لقوى الأمن الداخلي اللبناني في بيان اليوم انه بتاريخ 7 / 8 / 2017 وفِي مدينة طرابلس عند مدخل المسجد المنصوري الكبير أوقفت دورية أمنية معززة مواطن لبناني من مواليد عام 2003 للاشتباه به أثناء محاولته الدخول الى المسجد .
وأشار البيان إلى أنه لدى توقيفه وتفتيش حقيبة صغيرة كانت بحوزته حاول المغادرة على عجل فمُنع من ذلك، وقد عُثر داخل الحقيبة على قنبلتين يدويتين .
ولفت البيان إلى ان الموقوف أحيل مع المضبوط الى شعبة المعلومات، بناء على إشارة القضاء المختص، للتحقيق معه، حيث اعترف بانتمائه الى تنظيم داعش الإرهابي، وانه كان بصدد الدخول الى المسجد وقت صلاة العصر، ورمي القنبلتين بينما المسجد يغص بالمصلّين، على أن يقوم بعدها بانتزاع بندقية أحد عناصر قوى الامن الداخلي وإطلاق النار على من يبقى على قيد الحياة، إلا أن توقيفه حال دون حصول هذه الفاجعة.
كما اعترف الموقوف بأنه اختار المسجد المذكور كونه على علمٍ مسبق بأن عددا من السواح وعناصر قوى الامن الداخلي يرتادونه عادةً للصلاة .
